POUBELLE – the beauty of waste material
Residency, open studios, workshops and exhibition
Sept 15 – Oct 20, 2024 at Augustiana Kunstpark and Kunsthal, Denmark.
Lisbeth Parisius and Mirjam Berloth organized a residency with artists from 3 countries. Some of them they had met before, others they knew from instagram. Through an appeal in the local newspaper, discarded materials and pieces of furniture were brought to the museum where the artists made new, contemporary and abstract sculptures with it. They also organized workshops and lectures. For more information see www.poubelle-united.com and instagram poubelle_augustiana
Poubelle takes a critical view of the consumption of new materials. Accordingly, they refuse to be part of today’s throw-away culture, instead using available materials that bear traces of previous use. The artistic process is all about experimentation, playful exploration and simple abstraction. The art project kicked off with the collection of waste materials found in and around Augustiana. The artists lived and worked in Augustiana where they created new artworks out of discarded materials and objects. Their goal is to re-enchant the materials by placing them in new meaning-making contexts.
Made possible by Culture Moves Europe, Goethe Institute, Sønderborg Kommune.
BK Informatie, a Dutch magazine for artists, published a column.

Above some examples of experimenting with objects. I am interested in the properties of the material; how far can it bend, how does it move, and where is the tipping point? It is a form of respect for these discarded materials and to me a way of relating to a world where everything is conceived, made and shaped. I try to look at things with new eyes by isolating them from what they were made for. The last picture is of an installation made of an orange tube and a discarded metal waste bin. The artists ensembled it together and named it ‘Poubelle’.
