i made a Donald Judd
After seeing a sculpture by Donald Judd made of corrugated steel, Mirjam Berloth recreated the piece using cardboard, colored paper, and tape, transforming it into something almost the opposite of Judd’s intention, which was formal and methodical.
Attempting to recreate another artist’s work is bold, and Mirjam acknowledges this. She says, “Trying to recreate a well-known work is a valuable learning experience because it forces me to look closely and deeply, which increases my understanding of the process.
This work, together with other works by her and 5 other artists, was part of the exhibition Color/ No Color, curated by Wilma Vissers and Monique Kwist. The exhibition at de Vishal Haarlem addressed the artist’s choice to leave out all color in order to enhance form or to use color as a means of expression, a dilemma that dates back to the Renaissance.
